Prof. Dr. Stefan Pickl

Chair for Theoretical Mathematics & Operations Research, Universität der Bundeswehr, Munich
Stefan Pickl

Stefan Wolfgang Pickl was born on 29.09.1967 in Darmstadt. He read mathematics, theoretical electronics and philosophy at TU Darmstadt. Mr Pickl was science assistant and project leader in the 'modelling and simulation' area at the Centre of Applied Informatics in Cologne (ZAIK).

In 2000, Prof. Pickl received the dissertation prize for the operations research company as well as international 'best paper' awards in 2003, 2005 and 2007. He is also the vice-coordinator of the European workgroup for 'experimental economics/design' and he is an advisor for the Centre for the Advanced Studies of Algorithms (CASA) at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Prof. Pickl received visiting professor invitations from 2004-2008 in the USA (eg. NPS Monterey) and he is an associated member of the UCF in Orlando in the 'intelligent management systems and service orientated assisted decision making' area. Since July 2005, he has taken up the post as Professor for Operations Research at the Universität der Bundeswehr in Munich. He established a high achievement programme, cooperating with Stanford USA in 2006 and is the Director of his own established centre of excellence, COMTESSA.

His research focuses on analysis, control and optimisation of complex systems and intelligent management systems. Furthermore he is interested in the IT protected process optimisation as well as game theory, service orientated management, business and specialised logical processes on all levels to give goal orientated and effective support.

Prof. Pickl was the visiting scientist in the Los Alamos National Labs in the SANDIA Laboratory as well as MIT and the Santa Fe Institute for complex systems. He was one of the first mathematicians to develop a model of simulation for the international CO2 conflicts.

In the meantime, he is developing intelligent management systems within COMTESSA which run the so-called ORACAL – Operation Research Cell Analysis and use the management assisted library EUB. In the international area in secure information and communication integration at NPS Monterey the intelligent reachback system (IRIS) is being developed with unique innovative simulation integration for a number of years.

Prof. Pickl is featured in over 120 publications and has been the chair of many international conference in the 'simulation and complex systems optimisation' field.
